A Place to Call Home
SCANN is a home to currently 88 former street children. For many of these children, SCANN provides the first bed many of these kids have ever slept in. These children spend between 10 to 15 years with us until they are well educated and ready to live independent, productive lives within our Society.
It's a place to learn, to play, to grow up and to have an education. Many of SCANN's alumni were street orphans, literally found in the gutters of Kenya and are now college and university graduates!
While SCANN is a not for profit organization, it is more so a new family for children that once believed they had lost theirs forever.
Our mobile outreach teams visit areas where street children gather to provide immediate assistance, build trust, and offer pathways to more permanent support at our home.

"A childrens' home isn't just a place, it's where young minds are educated, nurtured so their future begins to grow."

David's Story
David joined SCANN in 2007 at the age of 13 years following the demise of this father. The father was a drunkard and abused the mother and children. David was living with his 2 siblings and single mother who could not adequately care for them. Hence, David ended up in the Streets of Nakuru. David was found on the streets by a SCANN volunteer and following interviews by the Trustees, he was admitted to SCANN.
David found the desired security, shelter, food, clothing, healthcare and most importantly Education. He lived in harmony with all the other boys and joined extracurricular activities like football and karate. Above all, David worked hard in his academics and scored a mean grade of B+ in K.C.S.E in 2014. He then joined Egerton University in 2015 to pursue bachelor of medicine and surgery. SCANN fully sponsored David for all his needs for over 16 years since his admission to the center.
David graduated with a degree in medicine and surgery on 10th February 2023. He undertook his Internship Program as a Doctor at Trans Nzoia County Referral Hospital. He now practices as a qualified doctor and surgeon at Kitale General Hospital. SCANN congratulates and wishes David the best of luck in his future endeavors.

David's Letter of Appreciation
"Thank you for the many years that you have been supporting me with my basic needs: food, shelter, clothing, and most importantly education without giving up. I have never lacked anything for all the 16 years that I was in SCANN. I remember I joined SCANN as a young boy with only a dream but SCANN made it possible for me to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor. All this would not have been possible if it was not for your endless support. I will forever be grateful for what you did to me because I know that there is no way that I can ever repay you for what you did. I pray that I will be blessed in future so that I can give back to society in helping the needy just as you did to me and maybe even join hands with SCANN to take it to another level. May God bless you for the good work that you have always done and add you more so that you can keep up doing it."

John's Story
John was under SCANN's care for a period of 14 years. He joined SCANN in 2007 amidst the post-election violence which displaced him, his siblings and his single mother (widow) from their home in a slum area in Nakuru town. After a thorough background assessment, John was found to be needy and was approved for admission. He found a new home where he would continue to receive ultimate care and quality Education. John graduated with Bachelor of science in nursing from Egerton University, thereafter successfully undertaking internship program at Chuka Referral Hospital. He now passionately serves in the nursing field, applying what he learned to improve lives every day.

John's Letter of Appreciation
"My sincere gratitude and thanks giving for an awesome support for the time I spent at S.C.A.N.N. To be honest I have spent few days figuring out what I can write that can be congruent with all the wonderful memories that I have created with my brothers and all the support I have received at S.C.A.N.N., but it's overwhelming what you have done to my life. I can't even explain it in words only "sometimes I will need to use my tears also for the story to be complete"."

OUR CHILDRENS' JOURNEY
From the streets to a bright future - follow the transformative path our children take at SCANN.
From Vulnerability to Empowerment
When children first arrive at SCANN, many have experienced trauma, neglect, and hardship beyond what most can imagine. They come from the streets of Nakuru, having survived through their wits and resilience, but carrying the weight of their past experiences.
The journey begins with providing immediate needs - nutritious food, clean clothes, medical care, and most importantly, a safe place to sleep. But the physical transformation is just the beginning.
Over time, with consistent care, education, and love, we witness remarkable changes. Children who once struggled to trust begin to form bonds with caregivers and peers. Those who had never been to school discover the joy of learning and develop academic ambitions.
As they progress through primary and secondary education, our children develop confidence, skills, and dreams for their future. Many go on to vocational training or university, becoming self-sufficient adults who contribute positively to society.
The journey from street child to empowered adult isn't always smooth or linear, but with patience, dedication, and the support of our community, we've seen hundreds of children transform their lives at SCANN.
